Salary Sacrifice Schemes

Electric car salary sacrifice schemes for businesses of all sizes

Help your employees access a new electric car through a tax-efficient workplace benefit

Is a vehicle salary sacrifice scheme right for your business?

For employees, salary sacrifice can cost considerably less than arranging a comparable vehicle privately.

As an employer, you can strengthen your benefits package, support recruitment and retention, and contribute to your environmental objectives without taking on a large administrative burden.

Manage Your Fleet can help you assess whether salary sacrifice is suitable, establish the scheme and support your business and employees throughout.

How electric car salary sacrifice works

The employer leases an electric vehicle and provides it to the employee as a company car. The employee agrees to a reduction in gross salary in return for the vehicle and pays company car Benefit-in-Kind tax.

Because the salary reduction is made before Income Tax and National Insurance are calculated, savings may be available to both the employee and employer. The actual amount depends on factors including the employee’s salary and tax position, the selected vehicle, annual mileage and the terms of the scheme.

One important distinction is that the lease remains the employer’s responsibility. A salary sacrifice vehicle is still a company car, even though the employee funds it through a reduction in salary.

That’s why the scheme needs to be structured carefully, administered properly and supported by a suitable policy.

Salary sacrifice for smaller businesses

EV salary sacrifice schemes for SMEs

Many well-known EV salary sacrifice providers concentrate on organisations with hundreds or thousands of eligible employees. This can leave smaller employers assuming that a scheme is unavailable to them.

Manage Your Fleet can establish an EV salary sacrifice scheme for a business with just one qualifying employee. This makes it an option for SMEs that want to offer a meaningful employee benefit without operating a large company car fleet.

A service that’s scaled to your organisation

A scheme for one employee will not require the same implementation or communication programme as a scheme offered across a larger workforce, but both receive the same careful assessment and personal support.

Could an electric car salary sacrifice scheme work for you?

The salary sacrifice scheme is available to eligible employers operating PAYE and is designed for electric cars.

For an employee to participate, the salary deduction must not reduce their cash earnings below the applicable National Minimum Wage. Existing salary sacrifice arrangements, such as pension contributions, also need to be taken into account.

Salary sacrifice is unsuitable for self-employed people or directors taking a relatively low salary. Individual eligibility, tax implications and employment terms should always be checked before an agreement is made.

Is your busines eligible?

The best place to start is with a conversation. Let’s discuss an EV salary sacrifice scheme for your business.

A fully supported salary sacrifice scheme

We begin by understanding why you are considering salary sacrifice, how many employees may qualify and what you want the scheme to achieve. This might include improving recruitment, strengthening employee benefits, supporting EV adoption or reducing the impact of grey-fleet travel.

You can expect support with:

Scheme structure and policy

Establishing the rules, eligibility and protection appropriate for your business.

Employee onboarding

Setting up eligible employees with secure access to their vehicle options.

Personalised vehicle selection

Presenting costs based on the individual employee’s circumstances, mileage and location, not an unrealistic generic example.

Ordering and delivery

Arranging the selected vehicle and keeping the employer and employee informed.

Payroll administration

Providing the information needed to make the correct monthly salary deductions.

In-life support

Supporting servicing, maintenance, tyres, breakdowns and other vehicle requirements throughout the agreement.

Employee communications

For larger schemes, support can also include employee communications and promotional material to explain the benefit and encourage appropriate uptake.

Early termination protection

Early termination protection may be available in case of redundancy, long-term illness, retirement, loss of licence or a reduction in working hours. The precise protection and exclusions will depend on the policy selected.
